8:00 pm…

A great day today - our first full day together outside the hospital. Though we both had a rough night - Sandy fearful at times about being away from the safety of the hospital - I would awaken and hold her until she fell back asleep. We also had to wake up twice so I could give her the medicines she has to take every few hours. But we awoke in each others arms for the first time in what seemed like an eternity… what a gift.
After a little breakfast in bed, I helped Sandy wash her hair (she still can’t get the incision area wet) so it’s a careful two-person job over the sink. This afternoon we drove to downtown Palo Alto (only a few minutes away but we hadn’t been there yet) and walked past all the cool shops, outdoor cafes and pubs and went to this great restaurant - which turned out to be some of the best mexican food we’ve ever had - and it was good to see Sandy eating real food again… and there we were, marveling again at something so simple as going out to eat. We walked around a little more - slowly, as Sandy is still weak and not completely steady on her feet. We got back to the hotel and went and laid in the sun by the pool - had it all to ourselves - Sandy napped there awhile, exhausted from going out, and I floated on my back in the warm water and gazed at the trees overhead - some very meditative water therapy.
This evening we opened a bottle of champagne (Coppola’s Sofia for you wine people) and toasted life….
Good night,
Dan
PS - A perfect bit of good timing… Lance Armstrong is on TV tonight - Saturday Night Live - so that will be fun.

We have been praying for you. You are doing better with each day and hope you are soon home in Leavenworth….your own bed will feel great. Danny and Sandy taking care of each other…that is what it is all about. At mass this morning one song was the Servant’s Song and it is so meaningful…living Christ-like loving and caring for one another. A candle was lighted for you in the beautiful St. Joseph’s Cathedral Eucharistic Adoration Chapel in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Friday -Sioux Falls you ask? We had been to Chicago to see Uncle Con and family and I just had to show Uncle Shane “my Sioux Falls”! Love you both - hang on tight the ride seems rough at times but HE is with you all ways always. Love Aunt Janie

Hi Sandy and Dan So pleased to hear that the weekend has provided a little relaxation. Sandy, I know that feeling of insecurity when you are first out of the hospital. Sounds like Dan is better than your average nurse. You are in good hands. I put a card in the mail yesterday. I hope it will arrive at your hotel before you leave this week. I think there will be enough time. We are continuing to keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Take good care. Millie

Hello Dan and Sandy, First I want to tell you that I have been praying for you everyday and still am. I wanted to go and talk to your house sitter last week end to check on you both, no one was there. We were over at the house today and I heard you were doing very well and I got this e-mail address. I am so happy to read about your day today. What a beautiful day for you both. My thoughts are with you both. Cheryl and Brant

What great news that you are OUT of the hospital, truly out. The fourth graders made you cards, but I will send them to your home since I think you will be there soon. Monday they will be doing the “Haunted Maze” to raise money for the earthquake victims, and they are really excited. They have a special surprise for you, too. I think it will be sent to you down there in California, but otherwise at your home. Mary Lowe has been emailing me and I replied today with information about your blog. We’ll see if she gets through to you. That book you bought for your roommate sounds good. I’d love to borrow it when you are done with it, and I’m sure Mary would, too –but then maybe she’s already read it! What a woman! God bless you both, Sandy and Dan. Every morning you are in my prayers for healing and safety. Love, Merry
