The Blues, a Cruise… and Good Friends

Sandy and I had a great and very fun weekend. Saturday night we went to a local pub with some good friends to see a blues band. We had a lot of fun dancing and laughing the night away… and the Gnome made some new friends too…

Our thanks to Mark, Kelly, Bill, Susan, Henry, Nancy, Club Crow and the Junkyard Jane band for making this such a fun and unforgettable night! Dancing and laughing with good friends can cure anything.

Yesterday, Sunday, we went to a retirement party for Mary Lou, a teacher Sandy has worked with at her school for a long time. But it wasn’t your usual retirement party. It was on a yacht on Lake Chelan. The yacht is owned by some other folks Sandy has worked with at the school. The yacht is a classic, beautiful boat built in the 50’s and was once owned by Dean Martin. We had a great time cruising the lake and enjoying good food and good friends…

Thanks Scott and Caprice for hosting the party on board the Innamorata (Italian for sweetheart)! For more info on chartering their boat and dinner cruises, see their website. We highly recommend it! Being on the water in such a beautiful place with good friends can also cure anything.

Sandy started the chemo last night and so far is feeling OK. Thanks again for all the emails, comments and cards. We’re cruising along on your love and support.

Dan

Hi Sandy and Dan…Loved reliving the cruise with pictures and great commentary….and getting a peek at your night before…..think that’s called “burning the candle at both ends”! The cruise is a kind of setting and comraderie that could just continue forever…I was soooo thrilled that you could be there..Life just be more like that. And the 52 weeks of nature adventures book… the very first chapter is titled “Adventure on a Long Long Lake….Take a boat ride on Lake Chelan, deepest gorge in North America. Soak uo the solitude and alpine scenery.” And we just did that adventure…together! Love the inscription too. Thank you, Sandy. Being in your classroom, all of them, plus working with you on numerous committee type things like the SIP team, always reinfoces those amazing qualities of both passion and compassion that radiate from you. You exemplify the meaning of “teacher” in many forms but escpecially in problem solving…always modeling for kids the ways to find peaceful solutions leaving all with avenues of communication and caring. So, I look forward to our alpine walk together starting with the garden of friendship….think that should be in the Washington Nature book as well. love you, Mary Lou

From Donna Nylander Dearest Sandy and Glenna, Thank you so much, Glenna, for making sure I had contact with Sandy’s blog…And Sandy, I want you to know it is troubling to know that you are having to battle back the new series of problems..but..how very courageous you are, and..Yes, Sandy…how beautiful you are..inside and out…the photos of you are just glowing…and the story in your blog is so beautifully written…absolutely eloquent..It does make one absolutely aware of how you touch the lives of so many people…and they are able to let you know in so many ways…(the children at youor school wearing the bracelets..an example)…the garden and table and bird houses…and the countless other ways you are being given an opportunity to know you have made a difference in the lives of so many…I loved the the story of how you took the pennies, and the gnome and went to the fountain, and connected with the children gathered there with their teachers…wow…such a good moment for everyone…you have continued to reach out no matter what your circumstances…what a gift you give to each one…including the demonstration of what it means to be a teacher in the largest way…and a giving person in the clearest way… You probably remember Meg Gamon…she was in your class…her brother Paul walks with the 24 hour cancer walk each year…We always participate in his fundraising for the walk…You probablly know that Ellensburg, like many communities displays luminaries in honor of those who are cancer survivors and those who continue to battle cancer…We have made arrangements with Paul to have a luminary with your name to honor you and your renewed effort to survive cancer…It isn’t the same as holding your hand, Sandy and saying I love you…but somehow when your lulminary is with the luminaries of all the other people here in Ellensburg who are working with similar daily needs and troubles, doctors appointments, meds, fatigue, unanswered questions, unknown questions…somehow the combined lights, representing each personality, the symbol of representing great people, many ages, many backgrounds, many family groupings…it helps to connect each and every person …to the community of yesterday…today…and tomorrow…especially, Sandy…tomorrow… I so loved the precious little Sandy that I once took care of, I so loved the young woman who later returned to attend the university here…and today I admire and love the young woman who has invested so much in all the required effort to keep a focus on the wonderment of life as revealed in countless acts of love and kindness each day… Sandy…YOU are loved… Donna
